Intel Corp. and supercomputer maker Cray Inc. announced an alliance that could add to pressures on Advanced Micro Devices Inc., and aid Cray’s battles with much larger hardware vendors.

The alliance includes the use of Intel microprocessor chips in future Cray systems. The Seattle-based company now uses AMD chips, as well as internally developed technology.
